Abstract:
Computer simulation is one of the most important methods for analyzing telecommunication networks. Simulations in this field often require parallel streams of random numbers. Many simulation tools used by the scientific community in this area are not aware of the sensible task of generating uncorrelated random numbers. Their built-in generators are old and weak, thus producing severely wrong simulation results in certain scenarios. This thesis considers two of the most popular simulation tools for the field of telecommunication and shows the weaknesses of their random number generators in the context of elementary simulation scenarios utilizing parallel streams of random numbers. Improvements in terms of incorporating more modern generators are proposed, implemented and validated. One suggestion is to replace the built-in linear congruential generators, but they could also be retained if new parameters are used which are more aware of the multidimensional characteristic of complex, parallel simulation scenarios. In order to find parameters of good quality over a wide range of dimensions, a parallel approach implementing exhaustive and random search methods is proposed. With regard to the spectral test metrics as a quality characteristic of lattice structures produced by linear congruential generators, the results of extensive searches for good lattice points are presented. All results are provided by means of a web-based application and database server.

Abstract:
The quality of data transmission in the "original" Internet is not satisfactory for many current applications. More and more networking applications like Internet-Telephony, Multi-media-Conferencing or Remote-Teaching require a specific QoS (Quality of Service) for the transmission of their different kinds of data. With the specifications of service types like Controlled-Load [RFC2211] or Guaranteed [RFC2212] and appropriate protocols for QoS support like RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol), possibilities have been found to provide dedicated QoS reservations along the paths of data transmission. The "RSVP Management System" has been developed and implemented for a convenient handling of the reservation facilities of RSVP in a PC/Windows-based networking environment. This system supports reservations between any RSVP-capable hosts. The installation of reservations can be controlled and managed centrally. This master thesis contains the theoretical background for understanding the mechanisms which are necessary to install reservations of specific service types, it describes the concepts of the RSVP Management System and shows how the system can be used in connection with current multimedia applications.
